Fluxury 2010
progress:
Fluxury rehearsals are a joy, we're playing new songs and tunes from before, but not before expanding or renovating them, or blended them with new ideas. Jan is protecting his hearing ore effectively now, so we took on some rock again. 2010-05.
welcome Mireille:
We found the perfect singer to complete our line-up. Mireille van Leeuwen has a warm soulful voice and lots of experience singing a wide range of styles, classical, rock and pop. She's currently absorbing the songs on the new setlist. 2009-10.
back in the band:
after a 4 year leave of absence guitarist Mattijs de Jong is back with Fluxury. His return marks a shift in our live approach, necessitated by Jan's hearing loss: from now on concerts will be moderately amplified. 2009-09.

Fluxury outdoors - Rehearsal: Mireille van Leeuwen (vocals) - Jan Kuipers (keyboards, composer, director) - Stelios Kalis (drums) - Jos Witsenburg (bass, song lyrics) - Mattijs de Jong (guitars)
Sundance
we're happy to present our four song 25 minutes EP 'Sundance' for free download. Susan Heijen sings the ballad and the rock songs, the instrumental title track has guest guitars by Fred Rosenkamp of
Ladylake.
press: set it on repeat, you won't notice repetition ... each new play shows a new facet of Fluxury ... Dmitri M. Epstein (
DME): 5/5.
fine band sound ... symphonic climax ... Danny Focke (
Prog-nose): 8,5/10

keyboard story
auch:
Composer / keyboard player Jan suffers from hearing loss. He wants an end to the loudness, maybe stand down to only write the songs. So either we find a fitting keyboards player or we'll only play soft sunday afternoon concerts soon (april 08).
easing down:
Due to Jan's hearing loss we experimented with semi-acoustical instrumentation (jun 2008). It improved the dynamics of our playing but we decided to stick to amplified rock music. Let's find a keyboards player.
Melanie:
18 year old Melanie Bakker is our new keys player. See picture on the right (june 08). The first gig with Melanie was in Leiden. It was an 18 minute - 4 song gig on a cultural event. We shared the stage with a fairy tale teller, a poet, another story teller and a singer songwriter.
America:
Melanie was asked to live in the US for 7 months. We decided to move on without her (nov 08). We'll go and search for a keyboards player again.
last concert:
After searching for 6 months for a fitting replacement we decided to close this line-up with a concert in cultural cafe Bacchus - with Jan. We played a solid 75 minute set, a fitting goodbye to Jan as an amplified musician - unless nanotechnology brings back his hearing.
Bacchus Da Musica, december 6th 2008 (Clockwise: 10:00 Jan Kuipers; 12:00 Jos Witsenburg; 2:00 Stelios Kalis; 5:00 Jetse van der Moolen; 7:00 Susan Heijen) - Fluxury live NsN4 2008: Jan & Jetse

Fluxury 2007
There's no denying it: we miss the dynamics of the band. Just the studio is not enough. We're gonna start a new band.
Join Fluxury!:
Stelios (drums), Jan (keys) and Jos (bass) are looking for a
guitar player (M/V) and a
singer (V) to complete the band. Experience is needed.
From 2007 on we want to play live 3-6 times per year. Interested? Mail us: jos at fluxury dot nl.
Auditions closed:
Since april 2007 we're a complete band again. Susan Heijen (vocals) and Jetse van der Moolen (guitars) joined Jan, Jos and Stelios. We focus on playing a solid set of existing songs before we move on to new music.
Live 2008 Jetse, Susan, Jos - promo picture, L2R: Jan Kuipers (composer, keyboards) - Susan Heijen (lead vocals) - Stelios Kalis (drums) - Jos Witsenburg (song lyrics, bass) - Jetse van der Moolen (guitars).
Live 2007/8
NederSymfo Nite 4:
On 23-05-08 we hosted the 4th version of NederSymfo Nite in de Peppel, Zeist. We shared the stage with
WaveWorld,
Kramer and
LadyLake for some free music.
Winston Amsterdam:
On 20-01-08 we played in Winston Club with R!fe from Lelystad for 60 people. Winston is the perfect live venue: great sound - on stage and in the audience - thanks to a no-bulshit sound engineer.
Dudok Hilversum:
After a private try-out at Pablo's studio in Amsterdam (02-12-07) for friends & family our first public gig was at Hilversum Dudok cafe (15-12-07). Outside it poured with rain and inside about 75 people attended our one-hour show. Thank you all for your cheers and applause. We had a great time.
the line-up:
Jetse van der Moolen (guitars); Jos Witsenburg (bass, song lyrics); Susan Verheijen (lead vocals); Jan Kuipers (composition, keys), Stelios Kalis (drums).
the songs:
Drexler's curse - Me, the enemy - After the revolution - Unreality - Interior decorator blues - Nothing's safe - Dry heaven - Tucked away - Perishable goods - Shine!.
studio vs live: on albums we like multi-layering. On stage we simplify songs for instant fun. No polyrhythmics in
Me, the enemy, an extra chorus & verse in
Tucked away and
After the revolution etc.

Fluxury live 2008: Jetse, Susan & Jos (Pic: A. Haggenburg).
Fluxury 2005/6
No rockgroup this season but something new: a combination of mellow vocal oriented symphonic music and video. Synchronised clips and animations support the live music. With two new musicians and a video artist we created this season's show using 4 brandnew songs, 2
Lunar escape velocity tracks and one from
Perishable goods.

Perishable goods is out!
A twelve song symfony involving baroque, energetic rock with daring chord progressions and some tender folk ballads.
the story:
The release of 'Perishable goods' ended an intense creative period. When the material grew over 90 minutes we decided on a split. 'Perishable goods' is only part 1 of the 'End of privacy suite'. (10-05).
guest vocals
The release of
Perishable goods is posponed due to re-recording of all vocals. A job done by a selection of great
singers:
Thea van Rijen,
Marjon Bolck,
Patricia Beerens,
Marjolein van Tongeren. (12-04).
latest review:
'progressive: musically & politically ... great album. no. beyond great. essential. ... melodic hooks burned into my brain and still haunt me' (Fred Trafton of the Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock, 20/7/2006).

Fluxury 2004
This incarnation was ambitious, a crazy and funny gang of people.

Live at Patrick & Sabine's wedding
the line-up:
L2R: Mattijs de Jong (guitar) - John Reker (guitar & vocals) - Stelios Kalis (drums) - Ilse Kunst (lead vocals) - Sabine Kuipers (keys) - Jan Kuipers (keys) - Jos Witsenburg (bassguitar) - Leon Eliens (sound, not visible).
setlist:
Lookup - After the revolution - Light of other days - Remember a face - Tucked away - Shine! - Pretty perfect - Safety first - In silence we trust - Me, the enemy - Nothing's safe - Perishable goods.
Kuipers' place:
It was a beautiful crispy cold and sunny day when Sabine and Patrick got married (februari 20 2004). And it turned out to be a warm and friendly party that night. Fluxury played from 8 to 9 with Sabine in full marital dress. Later that night Lurch played 3 rocky sets. Thank you: Els Witsenburg & Joeri Hierck (video) - Patrick and Sabine (nice opportunity).
September 10 2004:
To make sure the complete one-hour set went smoothly on NederSymfo Nite 2 the next week we did a try-out at Marjan's where we played twice before. We started at 22:00 and about 20 people attended. It was also the very first presentation of the 'Me, the enemy' mini-album CD of which we actually sold 4 or 5 copies. A simple soundcheck (without Leon), no pictures, no recordings, no hassle. We played without problems and had a bowl of soup afterwards. Thank you: Andries de Jong (cheer) - Jeanet van den Wildenberg (4 types of food, all good) - Marjan Venderbosch (host - barlady - soup).
Nedersymfo Nite 2 - Tagrijn:
The NederSymfo Nite crowd enjoyed the 4 shows. Tagrijn provided decent light & sound.
Fluxury played better than ever; Ilse develops into an enchanting stage diva. It was a thrilling gig. Thank you
Ulysses,
Wave World &
For absent friends for the wonderfull event, it was great to play with you. (09-04) Hollands leading music magazine
Oor published a wonderfull
review on the 2nd NederSymfo Nite: '... topavond...'. (10-04).
Booomm
Fluxury the 7-p combo disintegrated. Ilse and John left the group explosively. Mattijs and Sabine decided to quit also. We called it a day. (10-04).
Fluxury live on NederSymfo Nite 2
Symfo Rock Festival:
Amstelveens cultural center P60 said yes to another Fluxury initiative: 3 Dutch progressive acts live on saturday nite december 4th 2004, free music, free lyrics.
Fluxury /
Plackband /
For absent friends. (09-04).
Faf cancelled their show on the P60 SymfoRock Festival. A spectacular replacement was soon found:
Knight Area, a new Dutch group that raise considerable interest (and sales) with their album 'The sun also rises'. All Knights are experienced musicians yet the P60 festival will be their first live performance as a band. (10-04).
Too bad Fluxury exploded due to personal differences. Like Faf, we cancelled our attendance. On very short notice
Lady Lake was willing to replace us. Lady Lake was founded in the 70's, survived through the years and is moving stronger than ever. Their new album 'Supercleandreammachine' is planned for release this winter by Musea records (12-04).

Over the moon
On april 18th we recorded a demo of 3
Lunar escape velocity tracks that changed dramatically since 2001:
Tucked away,
Pretty perfect,
Remember a face. Els will use the video to create a clip. (04-04)
On the NederSymfo Nite 2, our debut album
Lunar escape velocity was made available as special 2 disc package with DVD
Over the moon (clips of 2001 songs
Tucked away &
Remember a face played by 2004 Fluxury). (08-04)
Video action
Els Witsenburg gathers material for several Fluxury related projects. She films concerts, recording sessions and interviews. The plan is to make a movie parallel to the release of our new album Perishable goods. (09-03) Finished video projects to date: (10-04)
"Over the moon": 2 song DVD as bonus disc (released sept 2004).
several Fluxury Live registrations for internal use.
"NsN2 backstage movie" (nov 2004), just for the people involved.
Clips to support songs on stage: 'Sundance' / 'After the revolution' / 'Unreality' / 'In silence we trust' (11-05)
Live 2003
2002 was spent re-inventing ourselves as a group. With a new line-up & a fresh setlist we did four concerts in 2003.
setlist:
Safety first - In silence we trust - After the revolution - Lookup - End of privacy - Snakecharmer setback - Pretty perfect - Remember a face - Light of other days - Shine! - Perishable goods - Safety last.
Marjan's place:
On april 26 2003, Marjan's place (Lelystad) hosted the 1st Fluxury concert in 16 months. We played 5 Lunar escape velocity songs + 6 brandnew songs (4 appear on Perishable goods). We invited 50 friends & relatives to create an easy atmosphere. Everything went well; the band kept their cool through all complexities and Marjon sang like a bird. The 'bootleg' recording was studied to improve future performance. During 'Perishable goods' (the song) the yellow-red-purple lightpost collapsed, thanks to Arnoud it didn't crash to the floor. Thanks you: Arnoud van Golen (light & photography, MD rec) - Jeanet van den Wildenberg (great food) - Marjan Venderbosch (host & barlady).
Boerderij cafe:
the 2nd gig of the 'new' Fluxury on june 4 2003 was witnessed by only 25 people, we had fun anyway. It took place in the very nice stage-cafe of Zoetermeer's pop-temple: de Boerderij. Recordings show a more dynamic Fluxury; smooth interactions. Unfortunately it was the last concert with Marjon. Thank you: Arnoud van Golen (photos below, listening) - Femme van Leeuwen (photos, cheer).
Marjan's place:
the october 4th concert in Lelystad (NsN1 try-out) was the best show we ever did. We were well prepared, played 100% by heart and had a lot of fun. Ilse proved to be the perfect match for Fluxury, she sure knows how to bring lyrics to life. The future smiles at us. 16:00 gear, 18:00 soundcheck, 19:00 chinese take-away, 21:00 PLAY. 20 people got wind of it and attended. The current playlist only takes 30 minutes so we played it twice. Els Witsenburg recorded the 2nd set on video.
Nedersymfo nite 1 - Gooisch Podium:
The 1st NederSymfo Nite (Hilversum october 25 2003) was a great experience. A wonderful evening: beautiful music and good fun. Thank you Salmon & Flamborough head for being such fine individuals and musicians. For sure there will be another NederSymfo Nite in 2004. (10-03).
A nice review on NsN1 in Background Magazine (Arthur Haggenburg). (01-04).

vocal duties
vocalist (M/V):
(06-03) auditie gesloten.
Hooray: Marjon:
After months of auditioning we found a lead-vocalist. Marjon Bolck is experienced, good-looking, has an athletic voice and makes Fluxury yet more fun for us all. (09-02).
Goodbye Marjon:
After only 9 months with us Marjon quit the band. Fluxury wasn't her thing after all. We'll miss you Marjon, don't be a stranger. Obviously we've got a vacancy. (06-03).
new lead singer:
A miracle: after a search of only 2 months we found Ilse Kunst. She'll join Fluxury starting immediately. She's a skilled vocalist with a sensitive voice that reminded us of Joni Mitchel. She can even play guitar. (08-03)

John & Mattijs in "snaren repititie" - rehearsal sunday at Simon's Marjon Bolck - Fluxury 2003 at Simons parking space - Fluxury live 2003 (Marion's - Boerderij Zoetermeer)
New album plan
Recording of 'End of privacy' will start in may. It will be an album with songs about the tensions between privacy and safety. Musical links: J.S. Bach, Dmitri Shostakovich, Red hot chili peppers, Ennio Morricone, King Crimson. (12-02) The plans have changed considerably since then. (09-03).
a privacy suite
When the ideas for the new album grew to over ~2 hours of music, we decided to extract the privacy mini-suite ('End of privacy', 'Symmetry', 'Privacy fugue', 'The duke' and 'Return to privacy') for future use. This ensures we can release 'Perishable goods' as a one-disk album. (11-03)
Fluxy christmas
Radio Six DJ Tony Currie asked for a sonic christmas card. We were happy to oblige. Listen to the fresh full-band sonics in 'Xhine', a pre-mix of our song Shine! (11-02)
What's that smell?
Ever heard of Progression Magazine? We sent Lunar... for a review. In a standard response publisher JC congratulates us with being chosen for a review, followed by an ad-pricelist as long as my arm; '... to capitalize upon the review ...'. We don't spend marketing money, so I decline and ask him a pre-print. He says '... can't share before it's published, but I think it will be a positive review. will you place an advertisement? ...'. In 09-02 (#41) Lunar ... is graded 5/15; they NEVER grade low. It was naive to send PM a copy: it's no music magazine but a trap for selling ads. Ah well; you live & learn. (11-02)
First air
Mark 'from Holland' Deren (Radio Heemskerk, sundays at 24:00) interviewed Jos on his show & played some Fluxury tracks. Since then more songs are played by conventional and internet radio stations every day. (06-02).
recent radio events:
ProgRadio.com: 4 song special /
Xymfonia: 5 songs in prime-time /
Remember The Future: 3 songs 'in rotation' /
Radio Six: Xhine! 6 weeks in 'randomplay'; all of 'Lunar ...' in 'Music Machine' /
Paperlate Rock Radio: Xhine! /
Delicious agony: 2 songs. (01-03)
Live 2001: honeymoon weeks
This was the year Fluxury went public, we played four concerts. Ingrid (lead vocals on CD) had just left the band, we were helped out by 3 fine classically trained vocalists, thank you: Femme, Carolien & Ronald, time was short yet the performance was brilliant. (11-01).
setlist:
Introduction (from CD) - Pretty perfect - Volatile - Lookup (a capella) - Lookup (tutti) - Donkey bridge - Tucked away - In silence we trust - Snakecharmer setback - and some covers at Sabine's request.
Tagrijn:
Try-out tuesday oktober 16 2001 in the Hilversum Tagrijn (free entrance, 20:00 Dutch Insult team / 21:00 Fluxury / 22:00 Momo). D.I.T. brought about their own young noisy crowd. Fluxury raised considerable interest, about 100 people attended. MOMO deserved more than 20 odd people that stayed. It was try-out tuesday for the fresh sound engineers to: the sound-novices got plenty of time from their seniors to find and solve the many problems on their own. All pictures on page are from the try-out.
Kuipers' place:
Sabine & Patrick organized a goodbye-see-you-later party. On november 10 2001 at 22:30, Kuipers' place was stuffed with people: about 100 people witnessed the show.
RAI cafe:
Fluxury played at a 'personeelsborrel' for the RAI Vereniging, in the RAI Complex in Amsterdam on november 23 2001, 17:15 Fluxury, 18:00 RDC band. John played in both bands, he did a good singing job with the RDC guys, we're gonna convince him to do that in Fluxury also. It was Mattijs's first and Caroliens last Fluxury performance. 50 or 100 people attended. They didn't care much about it. Many of them didn't even take off their tie. It did make us some money though.
Willem Waalre:
On december 8 2001 Fluxury played at Willem's metal whatchamecallit workplace. His heavy equipment wasn't placed yet, but the new building was ready 'n' willing. Willem invited everyone he knew and a 100 people attended his party. Outside a fire was burning, inside the beer was flowing. They sure know how to party in Waalre: good fun to play for this crowd. We ended the show with some covers at John's request. This was the last concert with Femme and Ronald.
L2R: Sabine Kuipers (guitar & vocals) gigs 1,2 - Jan Kuipers (keys & vocals) - Femme van Leeuwen (soprano) - Carolien Kraaijkamp (soprano) gigs 1,2,3 - Ronald van Gerner (tenor) - Stelios Kalis (drums) - John Reker (guitar & vocals) - Jos Witsenburg (bass, not visible) - Mattijs de Jong (guitar, not in) gigs 3,4 - Femme, Carolien and Ronald in action / Sabine Kuipers
Fluxuri
is the Romanian word for currents / movements / trends, adding to the notion that the name Fluxury (a contraction of 'flux' and 'luxury') means 'wealth through evolution'. (10-01)
We release - therefore we are
Fluxury 2001: 'Lunar escape velocity'. 500 pressed copies, how on earth are we ever going to get them sold ? (10-01). Not (04-07).
